Housing societies in Nerul, Belapur and Sanpada are reducing non-essential water use after NMMC said Morbe dam’s usable stock stood at 73.9%.

Nerul, Belapur and Sanpada housing societies are curbing water use after NMMC said Morbe dam’s usable stock stood at 73.9%.

Bhimashankar Society in Nerul, which has 763 flats and 948 vehicles, has dug three borewells to shift vehicle washing and gardening away from the municipal water supply. Its chief adviser, Ravindra Ithape, said the society also plans to reduce the frequency of its regular water supply from next week.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) said Morbe dam’s usable water stock stands at 73.90% and asked residents to avoid waste. The civic body warned that people found washing vehicles with drinking water would face penalties.

In Belapur, Parsik Green Association is discouraging car washing through direct water connections and checking storage tanks to prevent overflow. The association, which covers more than 200 bungalows, also supports using treated sewage water to maintain greenery on a hillock.

Samata Society in Sanpada has asked residents to reduce water use for plants and washing machines until February. NMMC has also asked residents to repair leaking taps and pipelines promptly, and warned that it may disconnect drinking-water connections at construction sites if they are used for building work.
