Worli: 108-canvas installation to anchor Nehru Centre group show

A work made from 108 separate canvases will take shape as three rising, pagoda-like forms at Nehru Centre Art Gallery in Worli from September 22 to 28.

The installation anchors *Up Next: A New Wave of Contemporary Art*, curated by Ritu Chopra and Vikas Singh of Tela Art Gallery. The exhibition brings together 15 artists from India and abroad, with about 45 to 50 works across painting, ink, mixed media, impasto, devotional works and large installations.

The canvases use gestural motifs in ochre, terracotta, deep green and earthy brown, and can be viewed singly or as one composition. Chopra said the work reflects the show’s premise of individual artistic voices forming a larger movement.

Another installation uses fibre, fabric and found textiles, assembled through sewing and knitting. It uses domestic materials in an architectural-scale work that engages with labour, gender, sustainability and memory.

Participating artists are from Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Baroda, Bengaluru, Gurugram and Guwahati, alongside contributors from Norway, Russia and the US. The exhibition opens at the Worli gallery on September 22.
