38 return safely after ferry stalls off Gateway of India

Thirty-eight people returned safely to the Gateway of India on Thursday night after their harbour-cruise ferry stalled offshore, police said.

The ferry, Anwari, had left the Gateway of India for its usual 30-minute harbour cruise when a rope became entangled in its propeller at about 8.30pm, according to police. It was about 1.5 nautical miles from the monument, carrying 34 passengers and four crew members.

After the crew raised the alarm, personnel at the Gateway of India beat chowki assessed the situation and identified another vessel nearby. The ferry Azad Hind was diverted to Anwari, and its crew transferred everyone on board.

The passengers and crew reached jetty number 2 at the Gateway of India at about 9.10pm. Colaba police said they will question Anwari’s crew to establish what led to the stoppage.
