45 students evacuated from cracked Chirag Delhi PG after Satya Niketan collapse

Vansh Maurya had chosen a basement room in Chirag Delhi because it was the least expensive option he could find after joining Delhi University’s College of Vocational Studies (CVS). It had no windows, toilet or drinking-water facility; 12 students shared a ground-floor toilet.

Barely a month later, Maurya, 18, was among 45 students evacuated after cracks appeared in the nine-room building. MCD sealed the premises after inspections found severe structural concerns, including large cracks near staircases and sections of walls coming off.

Students were moved on Wednesday night to creches and classrooms adapted as temporary rooms at CVS and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College. CVS principal Professor Shiv Kumar Sahdev said staff were sent to evacuate students after the college was informed at 8.30pm.

The move followed the Satya Niketan PG building collapse, which killed seven people. Maurya, who is from Rudrapur in Uttarakhand, said his parents urged him to return home after he was shifted, worried about where he would stay next.
