Rain waterlogs approach roads at Delhi airport

Water pooled on the approach road and forecourt at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday afternoon. Passengers were seen wading through stretches near the Terminal 3 underpass and terminal gates.

Delhi Airport said heavy rainfall caused the accumulation and that it later cleared the water. It said domestic and international terminals were affected.

The showers also slowed traffic elsewhere in the city. Waterlogging was reported in Mahipalpur, Akbar Road, Subroto Park and Connaught Place.

The India Meteorological Department said light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, fell across most parts of Delhi over the previous 24 hours, with heavy rain at isolated locations. Safdarjung, Delhi’s representative weather station, recorded 32.6 mm in the three hours from 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Palam recorded 72.2 mm between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

The airport said the accumulated water around its terminal approach and entry areas had been removed.
