Air India logo removed from former headquarters in Mumbai

The Air India logo that stood atop its 23-storey Mumbai building has been removed, ending a week-long operation carried out by 10 Public Works Department workers.

The 38-by-24-foot sign was dismantled into 40 pieces on Wednesday. Made from perforated aluminium sheets, it had been designed to allow wind to pass through, but workers still faced strong winds from the Arabian Sea and intermittent rain. The rooftop has no parapet wall, PWD Mumbai chief engineer Pradnya Walke said, and the team used harnesses and helmets while removing the structure.

PWD took over the building on June 2 and plans to issue a makeover tender soon. It is intended to house state government offices. Sir J J School of Art has prepared at least 15 possible designs for the rooftop replacement; senior PWD officials will review them before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis makes the final selection.

Air India received coastal authority approval for the sign in 2015, and it was installed in 2017.
