Mumbai: Shailaja S. Kamat’s cityscapes at Jehangir Art Gallery

Shailaja S. Kamat’s paintings move between the brick walls and wells of Konkan villages and the newer construction she has watched rise in Mumbai and Pune. At 80, the artist brings those observations to *Beyond the Shapes*, her solo exhibition at Gallery 4 of Jehangir Art Gallery in Kala Ghoda.

Kamat has exhibited across India and in Dubai. The show draws on her observations of India’s transformation over decades, from rural settings and places of worship to industrial spaces and dense urban landscapes. Her paintings examine the lives and relationships within changing cities.

Blue, pink and yellow recur through the exhibition. Kamat uses pink and red tones for sunset, blue for night and yellow for morning, while making many colour choices as each painting develops.

*Beyond the Shapes* is open daily from 11am to 7pm through September 13 at Jehangir Art Gallery, Kala Ghoda.
