Daayra team discusses justice and punishment at Delhi event

Kareena Kapoor Khan said filmmaker Meghna Gulzar envisioned her *Daayra* police officer as someone who could wear lipstick and still command a room.

Kapoor Khan joined co-star Prithviraj Sukumaran and Gulzar at a Delhi event on Thursday to discuss the crime thriller, which released in theatres on September 17. The film casts the two actors as police officers on opposing sides of a moral conflict.

Gulzar said the story draws from multiple real-life crime and police encounter cases. Sukumaran said the film looks beyond the crime itself. “It’s about crime, the quantum of punishment, justice, and how justice is delivered,” he said.

Gulzar said the human element of a script remains her starting point, even when it deals with law, crime and punishment. The trio also discussed working across film industries, with Sukumaran contrasting Malayalam cinema’s informal working culture with Bollywood’s more corporate system.
