Delhi: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman portrait at Press Club of India

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman raises a hand in greeting from a black-and-white portrait above the wooden staircase of the Press Club of India, a regular meeting point for journalists in Central Delhi.

A plaque identifies him as the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh. Upstairs, one of the club’s halls is named the Bangabandhu Media Centre. The centre and the portrait were inaugurated in 2021 by a visiting Bangladeshi minister as Bangladesh marked 50 years of independence.

The members-only club at 1, Raisina Road has been part of Delhi’s journalistic life since 1958. Its polished handrails and wood-panelled staircase lead to a courtyard where reporters gather in the evenings, while the dining hall retains reminders of the institution’s early years.

A framed photograph from the club’s inaugural day shows minister G. B. Pant with Durga Das, its founding president, and D. R. Mankekar, its first secretary general. The Conference Hall also hosts digital-news launches and phone-based livestreams.
