Gurugram: Bandhwari waste processing falls 57% short of target

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) processed 3.2 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste at the Bandhwari landfill between March and July, 57% below its five-month target of 7.5 lakh metric tonnes.

MCG’s clean-air action plan set a processing target of 1.5 lakh metric tonnes a month from March. The civic body said rain disrupted the work and continued dumping of fresh waste had reduced the space available at the site.

A senior MCG official said the civic body had finalised another site to divert fresh waste. Once that site becomes operational, the official said, processing capacity at Bandhwari can increase.

About 16 lakh metric tonnes of fresh and legacy waste were at Bandhwari on December 31, 2025. In a July affidavit to the National Green Tribunal, MCG said it had issued work orders in January to two agencies to process 14 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste, divided equally between them.

Environmental activist Vaishali Rana said the latest figures showed processing was moving slower than planned. MCG’s action plan sets March 2027 as the deadline for completing processing at Bandhwari.
