Barapullah Phase III moves to load tests after ninth missed deadline

After missing nine promised deadlines over nine years, Barapullah Phase III is approaching a final safety check before commuters can use it.

The Public Works Department has ordered load tests on selected sections of the elevated corridor and its Yamuna bridge. Heavy trucks with a combined load of more than 250 tonnes are expected to be used across stretches of the structure’s nearly 150 spans. The exercise is expected to run for at least four days and will assess how the bridge performs under traffic-weight conditions.

A roughly 10-metre loop at Sarai Kale Khan is also still being completed. Officials expect that work to finish within a week.

The 3.5km, four-lane corridor is designed to create a largely signal-free connection between Mayur Vihar in east Delhi and Sarai Kale Khan, with links towards AIIMS and south Delhi. It could shorten journeys for residents of Mayur Vihar, Patparganj and Trilokpuri travelling towards Jangpura and the AIIMS area.

PWD has sought an August inauguration date from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s office, but no date has been announced.
