BDA hands over 1,441 percolation wells in Bengaluru

At Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout’s 4th Block, BDA chairman N.A. Haris handed over 1,441 completed percolation wells to the authority’s maintenance teams on Thursday.

The wells were installed at 77 BDA parks and residential premises. They are estimated to recharge 184.59 million litres, or 18.459 crore litres, of rainwater each year. The BDA says the project could benefit about 82,300 people by reducing surface runoff, replenishing groundwater and aiding flood mitigation.

United Way of Bengaluru implemented the One Billion Drops groundwater-recharge project with the BDA between February 2025 and February 2026. The partners selected sites after geological and GIS-based assessments of recharge potential, runoff patterns, available open space and the feasibility of upkeep.

Generally about 12 feet deep, the wells use concrete rings, aggregate packing, iron mesh and protective covers. The BDA has also launched a digital platform to track greening work, including sapling health and maintenance, and to offer volunteering, educational tours and a channel for citizen queries.

BDA maintenance teams will now maintain the wells.
