Bengaluru chicken shops plan two-day shutdown over ₹5-per-kg waste fee

Chicken shops linked to the Karnataka Poultry Traders Association are set to shut for two days from September 3, protesting a ₹5-per-kg fee proposed for the collection of poultry waste.

The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd. has appointed authorised service providers to collect, transport and process animal waste within Greater Bengaluru Authority limits. Under the arrangement, meat, poultry, fish and pork shops must hand over waste only to these providers. Animal bone waste will be charged at ₹3 per kg.

The association said a chicken shop generates about 32 kg to 35 kg of waste on average, including intestines, feathers, skin and bones. It argues that this material is processed into products such as pet food, and that shops should be paid a minimum support price rather than charged for collection.

If the demand is not considered, the association said shopkeepers may raise chicken prices to cover the additional cost. The planned closure begins as the fee arrangement is set to take effect.
