Bengaluru developer turns down ₹20 lakh hike, citing time outside work

A 31-year-old Bengaluru software developer reportedly declined a ₹20 lakh annual salary hike after weighing what the new job would take from his time at home.

The developer earns ₹45 lakh a year and was offered a role that would have lifted that to ₹65 lakh, Rohan Dhawan, founder of UAbility, said in a LinkedIn post. But the position also involved leading a team almost twice as large as his current one, joining calls with a US team four nights a week, travelling when required and potentially losing weekends to work.

Dhawan said the developer and his wife plan to have a child next year. He also trains five mornings a week and has dinner with his parents every Wednesday. Those routines mattered more to him than the raise.

His father initially questioned the decision, pointing to the size of the increase. The developer nevertheless chose to stay in his existing role, the post said.
