Bengaluru phases in KIA flyover ban; Peenya curbs autorickshaws

A 6km section of the KIA flyover between Esteem Mall and Vidyashilp Junction is now off-limits to two-wheelers, autorickshaws and goods vehicles. Many two-wheeler riders continued to use the stretch on the first day of restrictions.

Bengaluru Traffic Police said they will tighten enforcement against two-wheelers over the next two or three days. Officers cited the difficulty of safely stopping bikes moving through the middle and right lanes of the elevated road, which carries about 1.5 lakh vehicles a day. Police are stopping goods vehicles from entering the airport-road flyover.

For riders using the road below, the diversion can add time. One afternoon journey towards Vidyashilp took 11 minutes, while the return journey took 18 minutes through four signals. Traffic also moved slowly on the service road between the Kodigehalli upper ramp and GKVK.

At Peenya's 4.5km Sri Shivakumara Swamiji Flyover, police stopped autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods vehicles but were lenient with two-wheelers. Heavy and medium goods vehicles are barred there from 7am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm. Heavy goods vehicles have also been diverted from the Ragigudda-Silk Board double-decker flyover, while BGS Flyover restrictions continue for goods traffic.
