Bengaluru riders report mileage concerns after E20 petrol switch

K. Vinay, a delivery executive in J.P. Nagar, said his scooter’s mileage has fallen by nearly 5 km per litre since he began using E20 petrol.

He said the scooter jerks at traffic signals and sometimes stalls unexpectedly. Vinay also said he had to drain the fuel tank after moisture accumulated in it.

E20 petrol is a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% fossil fuel. Vinay is among Bengaluru vehicle users who say they have noticed lower fuel efficiency or uneven engine performance while using the blend.

M. Anthony, who runs a multi-brand garage on Bannerghatta Road, said his workshop has received complaints involving clogged fuel injectors, ruptured rubber gaskets and corroded fuel lines. He said ethanol can absorb water, and moisture-related separation in fuel tanks can affect vehicle components.

Anthony said such complaints were more common in vehicles manufactured before April 2023, which may not have materials compatible with higher ethanol blends.

Transport expert M. N. Srihari said vehicle users’ concerns should be prioritised. He called for consultation and clearer public communication on E20 petrol’s benefits, costs and effect on fuel economy.
