Worli: BEST considers themed streetlights for 1,450 poles

BEST is considering neighbourhood-based designs for 1,450 proposed streetlight poles in Worli, while the proposal remains deferred over design concerns.

At a committee meeting, members were asked to suggest design options before a contractor is shortlisted. Suggestions included fishing-related motifs for Worli, referring to the area’s fishing community, and conch-inspired designs for other parts of Mumbai.

The procurement plan lists 250 zinc-plated poles measuring nine metres, 1,100 poles measuring seven metres and 100 sleeveless poles measuring nine metres. BEST officials estimated the three lots at ₹66.12 lakh, ₹1.58 crore and ₹27.44 lakh respectively—about ₹2.5 crore in total.

BEST had deferred the Worli pole proposal a day earlier over concerns about the designs. The undertaking maintains more than 30,000 streetlights across Mumbai’s island city.
