Mumbai: BMC approves felling of 251 trees for BARC road link

Mumbai’s Tree Authority has approved the felling of 251 trees and transplantation of 48 trees for a road-connectivity project linking Old Mandala and New Mandala for the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

The Department of Atomic Energy is undertaking the project. The authority invited suggestions and objections through a newspaper advertisement and received none.

The approval requires the project to plant 2,211 new trees within 15 days of felling. The replacement trees must be local species and at least six feet tall. An undertaking submitted with the proposal states that the transplanted trees will be replanted on the same land.

Separately, the Tree Authority has issued a public notice on a proposal to remove 12 trees for an Amazon data centre in Powai.
