BMC orders site inspections as Mumbai’s 10% water cut continues

Mumbai residents who report weak taps, altered supply timings or pipeline leaks will have their complaints inspected on site under a new BMC directive.

Additional municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar has told the civic body’s hydraulic engineering department to investigate water complaints at the location, identify the cause and check with residents after work is completed to confirm that supply has returned to normal. The instruction covers low pressure, inadequate supply, distribution-timing changes and technical faults such as leakages.

Mumbai remains under a 10% water cut, although the reservoirs supplying the city were at about 95% capacity. Bangar said the cut could be withdrawn only if reservoir stock reaches 100% by September 30, citing below-average rainfall in August and the possibility of below-average rain in September.

The department will also examine whether each supply zone can receive full-pressure water on at least one designated day to reach tail-end areas of the network. Officials have been asked to identify and promptly repair distribution deficiencies, while keeping residents and local elected representatives informed about cuts, alternatives and remedial work.
