Borivli RTO resumes search for 11–12 acres for testing tracks

The Borivli RTO has resumed its search for a permanent site after a proposal to rent space in an MTNL building near Dahisar check naka stalled.

The office has operated from rented premises in Kandarpada, Dahisar West, since April 15, 2015. Its lease expired on March 31, 2025. A later proposal for 12,300 sq ft in the MTNL building received administrative and financial approval on December 5, 2025, including monthly rent of ₹26.58 lakh. MTNL communicated in April that it would auction properties across the country, halting the plan.

The RTO needs more than office space. Driving licence and vehicle fitness tests are now conducted on the open road behind its office in a residential neighbourhood. Officials cited safety concerns for pedestrians, residents and other road users, along with possible traffic disruption.

A permanent facility would need about 11–12 acres for separate driving and fitness tracks alongside the office. Officials are examining sites in Kandivli, Dahisar, Gorai and other locations within roughly three to four kilometres of the present premises. An earlier four-acre site in Aarey was considered too small, and the Forest Department did not grant construction permission.
