BRICS security plan brought temporary traffic stops to more than 35 Delhi roads

More than 35 Delhi roads, including Mathura Road, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road and Sardar Patel Marg, were placed under temporary traffic restrictions during VVIP movements for the BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam.

Delhi Police deployed around 15,000 personnel, alongside 200 companies of paramilitary forces, for security arrangements covering the airport, hotels, the summit venue and routes used by visiting dignitaries. More than 500 CCTV cameras were installed in the New Delhi zone, with facial-recognition and vehicle number-plate-reading systems among the surveillance measures.

Police said the city was not shut down. Instead, traffic was stopped and released in phases depending on the security situation and conditions on the ground. Metro and bus services continued to operate.

The restrictions affected key diplomatic and central Delhi corridors, including Shanti Path, Africa Avenue Road, Niti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Tolstoy Marg and APJ Abdul Kalam Road. Traffic police had surveyed the identified routes and coordinated with agencies and neighbouring states before the summit.
