Delhi EV charging demand may reach 700MW by 2030, BSES says

Delhi’s electric-vehicle fleet could rise from around 4.7 lakh to about 35 lakh by 2030, creating charging demand of roughly 700MW, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited general manager Pradeep Agarwal said at the India Clean Transportation Summit 2026.

Agarwal said the projected demand would account for around 3% of Delhi’s total electricity requirement and could be managed by the distribution network. BRPL, which serves almost half of Delhi’s electricity load, has sanctioned 155MW of EV load against a peak demand of 3,960MW.

Parking, rather than power supply, may be the more immediate constraint for residents. Agarwal said only about 10% of Delhi residents have parking at home. Resident welfare associations will need to identify community charging spaces and may need fire-safety clearances and upgrades to ventilation, cooling, motor capacity and transformers.

BSES is examining time-of-day tariffs and controlled charging to shift EV charging away from summer peak hours.
