Centre approves Metro 5 extension to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar

The Centre has approved a revised alignment for Metro 5 that would extend the corridor to Kalyan and add a spur to Ulhasnagar.

A notification issued on August 28 clears Metro 5A from Durgadi to Kalyan, with a spur from Bhoirwadi to Ulhasnagar. MMRDA commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee confirmed the approval of the alignment.

The extension and spur are planned to include Durgadi, Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Path, Shanti Nagar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Chowk, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. The revised plan also includes a short underground section around Bhiwandi. Metro 5’s car shed is planned at Kasheli.

MMRDA plans to issue tenders for the new works soon. The proposed links would offer commuters in Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and Bhiwandi an alternative to the Central Railway suburban network.

Metro 5’s first phase, between Balkum in Thane and Dhamankar Nagar in Bhiwandi, is an 11.9-km elevated corridor with six stations. The phase is estimated to cost ₹6,741.34 crore, is nearing completion and could open in 2027. It is planned to interchange with Metro 4 in Thane.
