Christ University seeks FIR after ABVP protest over promotion of 13 law students

Christ University has asked Nandgram police to register an FIR after protesters identifying themselves as ABVP members gathered at its Delhi-NCR campus in Ghaziabad over the promotion of 13 law students.

In its complaint, the university alleged that a group of about 20-25 people forcibly entered the campus on Friday, damaged the main gate and flowerpots, and assaulted women security personnel. It also alleged that the group blocked a public road, disrupted traffic and left students unable to leave the campus for about an hour. The university has sought identification of those involved through CCTV footage.

The protest continued outside the main gate on Saturday, affecting college-bus movement. ABVP district organiser and secretary Gaurav Kshatrya said the group would stay until its demand was accepted.

The students at the centre of the protest had not been promoted to the fourth year because of backlogs from first- and second-year examinations, the university said. It said some had six to eight pending subjects and that its promotion rules applied across its campuses.

Police said adequate personnel had been deployed around the campus while they investigate. The university said an examination committee would assess the demand and submit its report next week.
