Cockroaches released near Sahar Road Metro station in pothole protest
Watchdog Foundation used live cockroaches in a symbolic protest near Sahar Road Metro 3 station, calling for longer-lasting road repairs in Mumbai.
The group said the BMC received 10,106 pothole complaints between June 10 and September 10 despite road concretisation work across the city. Its trustee, Godfrey Pimenta, called for repairs that are durable, scientific and accountable rather than temporary patchwork.
Live cockroaches were released near Sahar Road Metro 3 station on Thursday as Watchdog Foundation protested potholes and road maintenance in Mumbai.
The activists said the insects were meant to represent filth and neglect on city roads. They argued that potholes persist despite ongoing cement concretisation works, which are intended to improve road conditions.
The group said the BMC logged 10,106 pothole complaints between June 10 and September 10. It said 760 complaints were received this month, including 40 logged on Wednesday.
“Despite repeated complaints and crores being spent on road repairs, potholes continue to endanger motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” said Godfrey Pimenta, a trustee of Watchdog Foundation. The group demanded durable, scientific and accountable repairs instead of what it described as temporary patchwork.
The protest took place beside a Metro station on Sahar Road, where road conditions affect people travelling by foot, two-wheeler and car as well as those accessing the Metro.
