Delhi starts allotment process for vacant EWS and freeship seats

Vacant EWS and freeship seats in Class II and above are being opened for allotment at eligible Delhi private schools for the 2026-27 academic session.

The Directorate of Education’s private school branch issued a circular on August 31, 2026, asking schools operating on land allotted by the government or the Delhi Development Authority to verify a tentative vacancy list. Minority schools are excluded from the exercise.

Schools had until September 3 to flag discrepancies with their zonal authority. Zonal officials are to examine those representations, with district-recommended proposals due by September 5. Where a school does not submit a representation, the department will treat the compiled vacancy data as correct.

Seats will then be assigned through a computerised draw of lots. The circular says a school cannot deny admission to a child selected against its declared vacancy by later saying that no seat is available. Schools that do so may face action under the Delhi School Education Act and Rules and the Right to Education Act, 2009.
