Delhi clears way for new B&B policy with seven-day deemed approval

Delhi’s bed-and-breakfast sector is set for a new regulatory framework after the Assembly repealed the 2007 law governing such facilities.

The proposed Delhi Bed & Breakfast Policy, 2026, now being prepared by the government, would introduce self-certification and self-renewal. It proposes deemed approval within seven working days, reducing the registration timeline from 30 days under the old law. Its draft was placed in the public domain on May 26.

The repeal follows a fire at a Malviya Nagar B&B nearly two months ago in which 23 people, including several foreign nationals, were killed.

The Assembly also cleared an amendment to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board law, moving the cut-off date for a cluster to qualify as a slum for rehabilitation from January 1, 2006, to January 1, 2026. Two further Bills cover time-bound delivery of public services and an update to terminology in the Delhi Fire Service Act. All four Bills will be sent to Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu for approval.
