Delhi food safety teams destroy 131kg of expired besan, khoya and atta

More than 131kg of expired besan, khoya and atta was destroyed during food-safety inspections at Delhi sweet-making units and markets on Wednesday, the Food Safety Department said.

Teams visited units in Okhla, Badli, Nihal Vihar and Narela, along with Okhla Subzi Mandi and Ghanta Ghar Subzi Mandi, ahead of Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami. They collected 37 samples of paneer, khoya, ghee, sweets and other food products for quality analysis at designated laboratories.

Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh directed the department to increase inspections, surveillance and enforcement across Delhi during the festive period, with particular attention to milk products, sweets and other items likely to see higher demand. He said those manufacturing, storing, distributing or selling unsafe or adulterated food would face action.

Earlier this week, the department said it had seized 508kg of paneer at Okhla Sabzi Mandi that it alleged was spurious. The department said action in Wednesday’s inspections will depend on laboratory findings and applicable legal provisions.
