Delhi High Court declines urgent hearing on plea for hostels in every DU college

A petition seeking hostel facilities in every Delhi University-affiliated college was not granted an urgent hearing by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday.

The plea was mentioned before a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia in the aftermath of the PG building collapse in Satya Niketan, near DU’s South Campus. The court questioned whether it could direct the university to create hostels through an interim order, and said the matter would be taken up on Wednesday.

The bench also noted that it had issued directions on Monday in another public-interest petition linked to the collapse. The lawyer for the petitioner said the new plea sought different relief, including a direction for hostel facilities across DU colleges.

For students who rely on private PG accommodation around the university, the petition places the availability of campus housing before the court as scrutiny of the Satya Niketan collapse continues. Six people were killed in the collapse.

The petition is due to be listed on Wednesday.
