Delhi records 354.1mm rain in August as monsoon axis lingers over NCR

Delhi recorded 354.1mm of rain from August 1 to August 30, measured until 5.30pm. That was 121mm above the India Meteorological Department’s long-period average of 233.1mm for the period.

The monsoon axis, a low-pressure belt that influences rainfall, remained over Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh for longer than usual. Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan recorded rainfall deficits during the period. Haryana was running an 18% rainfall deficit, meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya said.

Delhi also recorded excess August rainfall in 2025 and 2024, receiving 400.81mm and 390.3mm respectively.

The IMD has forecast very light to light rain in the first days of September, with multiple spells of light to moderate rain expected around mid-week. Rainfall is likely to ease after those spells.

Delhi’s average AQI on August 30 was 129, in the moderate category. Its August monthly average was 95, compared with 89 in August last year. The city recorded 11 moderate days and 19 satisfactory days, with no good-air days.
