Delhi Metro to start at 4am on Independence Day as Red Fort roads close
Metro trains will run every 30 minutes from 4am on August 15, while major roads and bus routes around the Red Fort face restrictions for the Independence Day ceremony.
General traffic will be barred on several roads near the Red Fort from 4am to 10am, with wider curbs on goods vehicles and buses lasting until 11am. Commuters heading through central and north Delhi, or towards railway stations and ISBT Kashmere Gate, should leave early and use alternative routes.
Delhi Metro will begin running at 4am on August 15, giving early travellers a rail option as Independence Day restrictions close key roads around the Red Fort.
Trains on all Metro lines will operate every 30 minutes until regular services begin. Lal Quila, Jama Masjid and Delhi Gate are the closest stations to the ceremony venue. The DMRC has also issued 1.3 lakh pre-vended QR tickets to the Ministry of Defence for invited guests; holders of valid physical admit cards can collect them at designated stations.
From 4am to 10am, general traffic will be stopped on stretches including Netaji Subhash Marg, Lothian Road, Chandni Chowk Road, Nishad Raj Marg, Esplanade Road and Ring Road between Rajghat and ISBT. The closures follow traffic curbs during the Red Fort rehearsal.
Goods vehicles cannot use the Nizamuddin Khatta–Wazirabad Bridge stretch from midnight until 11am. Interstate buses will be restricted between Maharana Pratap ISBT and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT, while city buses will not run on Ring Road between ISBT Kashmere Gate and Nizamuddin Khatta. Normal bus services are scheduled to resume after 11am.
