Delhi auto, taxi unions seek fare revision, warn of Sept 9 strike

CNG now costs ₹86.98 per kg in Delhi, and auto and taxi unions say the increase has made existing fares unworkable for drivers.

Indraprastha Gas Limited raised rates by ₹3.89 per kg from 6am on Saturday, August 29. Prices are now ₹95.59 per kg in Noida and Ghaziabad, and ₹92.01 per kg in Gurugram. Delhi’s CNG rate has risen by nearly ₹10 per kg this year, from ₹77.09 at the start of 2026.

The Auto Rickshaw Association and Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union have sought a fare revision or subsidy from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Rajendra Soni, the association’s general secretary, said drivers would strike on September 9 if fares are not revised within a week.

Taxi service owner Baljinder Singh said operators with fixed-rate contracts for schools and companies are being asked to absorb the additional fuel cost. Transporters also said higher CNG costs could increase the cost of moving vegetables and other essentials.

IGL attributed the revision to higher global LNG prices, linked to disruptions in gas-cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
