Delhi bus-route plan to link Metro and last-mile services

A Delhi commuter’s bus connection could be planned around the Metro station at the other end of the journey, rather than running parallel to the same Metro corridor.

The Delhi government has tasked IIT Delhi with preparing an integrated public-transport route plan covering buses, the Metro, e-rickshaws and Gramin Seva. The plan aims to reduce overlap between modes and redirect bus services to neighbourhoods with weaker access.

Passenger surveys are under way across the city. The feedback exercise covers 121 routes in the east zone, 181 in the west zone and 194 in the north zone. On corridors already served by the Metro, the plan may recommend reducing bus frequency or parallel routes and moving those resources elsewhere.

The plan also envisages reorganising e-rickshaw routes at a later stage. E-rickshaws and autos are intended to fill last-mile gaps in areas not served by buses or the Metro.

Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi railway stations are among the proposed integrated multi-modal transit hubs. IIT Delhi is expected to submit the route plan by February 2027.
