Delhi PWD plans ₹1.4 crore repairs on three flyovers

Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) plans repair work worth about ₹1.4 crore on the Nehru Nagar, AIIMS and Barapullah Phase-I flyovers.

PWD plans to remove the existing single-strip seal expansion joints and replace them on all three flyovers. Expansion joints allow concrete sections to expand and contract with temperature changes and accommodate movement from traffic. The work will also cover bearings, while Nehru Nagar flyover is slated to get steel height barriers.

Nehru Nagar flyover links Ring Road and Mathura Road near Ashram Chowk. The AIIMS flyover allows traffic to bypass the AIIMS intersection, while Barapullah Phase-I connects Sarai Kale Khan with the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium area.

PWD data shows that 85 of Delhi’s more than 100 flyovers are over 10 years old. The department has identified 44 structures older than 15 years for structural audits and phased repairs. Nehru Nagar flyover was built in 1969 and widened in 2003; the AIIMS flyover opened in 2003, and Barapullah Phase-I opened in 2010.
