Delhi Cabinet approves rooftop solar plan for 2.3 lakh homes by 2027

A Delhi household using up to 400 units of electricity a month could get a rooftop solar system of up to 3 kW without paying upfront under an amendment approved by the Delhi Cabinet.

The policy applies to domestic consumers whose average monthly electricity use in FY 2025-26 was up to 400 units, provided their roof is technically suitable. For a 3 kW system, the Centre will provide ₹78,000 and the Delhi government another ₹78,000. The Delhi government said it will meet the remaining difference between the subsidies and the tendered plant cost.

For households using up to 200 units, the existing 100% electricity subsidy will continue after installation, the government said. A 3 kW system can generate about 300 units. Households can send surplus power to the grid through net metering and receive payment at the discom's applicable rate.

Vendors will provide free operations and maintenance for five years. The policy sets a 25-day residential net-metering timeline, compared with about 75 days previously, and waives application and registration fees for systems up to 10 kW. IPGCL will select vendors and coordinate installation support and grievance redressal.
