Delhi Police says no permission sought for CJP’s planned India Gate march

Delhi Police is preparing for a proposed September 5 march from India Gate to its headquarters on Jai Singh Road, even though the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has not yet sought permission, a senior officer said.

CJP announced the 2.5km march on Monday, describing it as peaceful and alleging that the Centre had not met commitments made when its Jantar Mantar protest ended last month. The group said families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide, people alleging police brutality, students and youth organisations would take part.

Deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma said no request for a march or protest had reached the department. CJP said it would inform police in the coming days.

Police have said Section 163 prohibitory orders are already in force in the New Delhi district, and that protests and marches are allowed near Jantar Mantar with prior permission. Officers are considering a venue change to Ramleela Maidan or another site, depending on the expected turnout.

Security planning is under way around India Gate, the Parliament Street-police headquarters stretch and Connaught Place. Police have retained Central Reserve Police Force companies and said they could call in Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel if a large crowd is expected.
