Delhi proposes ₹11,427 crore water overhaul for west, south-west

Delhi has proposed a ₹11,427-crore overhaul of water infrastructure across nearly 3,830km in 20 assembly constituencies in west and south-west Delhi.

Chief minister Rekha Gupta said the plan is expected to serve about 36.4 lakh people through new underground reservoirs, distribution pipelines and district metered areas. It aims to improve supply, monitor distribution and identify water lost through leaks or other causes.

Under the proposed funding model, the Centre and Delhi government would each contribute 25%, while loans or public-private partnerships would fund the remaining half.

The proposal accompanies two Asian Development Bank-supported projects worth ₹1,741 crore in the Wazirabad command area. The works include about 836km of distribution network, including nearly 570km of new or replacement pipelines, and metering for around 2.15 lakh household connections. A ₹2,574-crore Wazirabad upgrade had earlier cleared a key approval stage.

The Wazirabad projects aim to reduce non-revenue water to 15% and support round-the-clock pressurised supply. The government also plans 131 district metered areas to track water entering the system, reaching homes and being lost along the way.
