Delhi event sends off India’s 503-athlete Asian Games contingent

India’s 503 athletes, representing 36 sports, received a send-off in Delhi on Tuesday ahead of the Asian Games in Japan.

Coaches, support staff and sports officials joined the contingent for a jersey-unveiling ceremony. Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the athletes to turn “pressure into performance” and opponents into opportunities.

Shooter Swapnil Kusale, a bronze medallist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, said the team’s mental and physical preparation had been strong and pointed to recent results by Indian shooters. Judoka Asmita Dey said she was confident of carrying her recent form into the competition.

Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha urged the contingent not to be overwhelmed by the occasion. “Make the occasion remember you,” she said.

The Games are scheduled to run from September 19 to October 4.
