Delhi begins ₹35/kg onion sales at 40 outlets

Delhi shoppers can buy buffer-stock onions at ₹35 per kg from 40 outlets across the city, more than 40% below the prevailing retail price of about ₹62 per kg.

Sales have begun at locations including NCUI Complex, CR Park, Ashram, Kidwai Nagar, INA Market, Delhi Cantonment, Narela, Alipur, Shahbad, Rohini, Shalimar Bagh, Tikri Border, Bhajanpura and Bawana JJ Colony.

Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said recent price increases were driven by hoarding and profiteering, while supplies were sufficient to meet festive-season demand. NCCF and NAFED hold the stocks, with onions transported by train and distributed through trucks in Delhi.

NAFED Managing Director Deepak Agrawal said the agency was discussing sales through ration shops with the Delhi government. The subsidised sales are set to continue in Delhi and expand to Lucknow, Patna, Amritsar, Kolkata and Chandigarh.
