Delhi steps up Independence Day security with checkpoints and drone surveillance

Delhi Police has stepped up its Independence Day security grid, putting additional personnel on the streets, setting up checkpoints and increasing patrols across the capital ahead of August 15.

In the southern zone, more than 1,600 personnel, including women officers, have been deployed, Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said. About 60 pickets, including border, major and minor checkpoints, are operating in the area. Traffic police, PCR teams and local police are carrying out joint checks of cars, two-wheelers and parking areas.

DCP South Anant Mittal said officers of all ranks were patrolling and checking suspicious people and vehicles. Senior officers and station house officers are also scheduled to inspect their respective areas.

Police are using drones to watch locations expected to see large crowds or heavier movement. East Delhi police said intensive checking was under way and action was being taken against anti-social elements. Border areas and major entry and exit points are also under closer watch as the August 15 celebrations approach.
