Delhi studies Sabarmati model for Yamuna riverfront parks and cycle tracks

Delhi minister Parvesh Verma said the government is examining parks, cycle tracks and sports grounds for a proposed Yamuna riverfront, drawing in part on Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront model.

Verma visited Gujarat with officials from the Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department and the Delhi Jal Board to study how the Sabarmati project addressed issues he said Delhi faces along the Yamuna. The government will examine which practices could be adapted for Delhi.

Verma said the government is also pursuing projects to reduce the sewage-treatment gap and treat dairy waste entering the Yamuna.

Changes to existing dhobi ghats are under consideration. Verma referred to the Sabarmati project’s approach of shifting such facilities and introducing mechanised laundry machines.

Separately, Delhi is planning a Chhath Ghat at Kalindi Kunj, estimated to cost ₹60 crore.

The proposed riverfront has no announced project stretch, budget or construction timeline.
