Delhi to register only electric light goods vehicles from January 2027

Only electric N1 light goods vehicles will be eligible for registration in Delhi from January 1, 2027, under a phased plan approved by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).

N1 vehicles are goods carriers with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3,500kg. From July 1, 2027, the electric-only registration rule will also apply in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Sonipat, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar. In the remaining NCR districts, new registrations from January 1, 2028, will be limited to electric and CNG N1 vehicles.

CAQM said LGVs make up about 1.2% of the active vehicle stock but account for roughly 3.3% of particulate-matter emissions from the active fleet. It said CNG produces lower primary particulate emissions than diesel, but still generates nitrogen oxides that contribute to secondary PM2.5 formation.

The commission has also set dates for heavier N2 goods vehicles, weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. Delhi will permit registration of only electric N2 vehicles from January 1, 2028; the five high-vehicle-density NCR districts follow on July 1, 2028, and the rest of NCR on January 1, 2029.

CAQM also plans stricter operating conditions for NCR stone crushers, including remote monitoring, video surveillance, PM2.5 and PM10 sensors, and wheel-washing measures.
