Delhi tribunal awards ₹56.87 lakh to RK Puram rider injured in bus-door crash

Dinesh Kumar, a 26-year-old security guard, was awarded ₹56.87 lakh after his motorcycle hit the open battery-cover door of a stationary bus in RK Puram on the night of October 27, 2022.

The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal found that the bus driver opened the door without checking traffic approaching from behind. In an August 4 order, Presiding Officer Abhilash Malhotra held the driver responsible for the crash and rejected the argument that Kumar had contributed to it.

Kumar sustained injuries that resulted in a 75% permanent physical disability in his left arm. He told the tribunal that the injury affected everyday tasks including dressing, lifting weight, driving and riding. As a left-handed person, he said the disability also limited his ability to work.

The award covers interest, future loss of income, medical and physiotherapy expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of marriage prospects. The tribunal directed Go Digit General Insurance Company to deposit the amount.
