Delhi red alert until 5 pm as heavy rain and winds hit parts of city

Heavy rain and strong winds swept through parts of Delhi on Friday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert until 5 pm.

Central and north Delhi, including Parliament Street and the Bharat Mandapam area, received light to moderate rain as the city prepared to host the BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13. In its 1 pm update, the IMD said many areas could receive light to moderate rain at rates of up to 15 mm an hour. Some locations could receive heavier spells over the following hours.

The IMD expects rain activity to continue over Delhi for the next two days, with light to moderate showers also possible during the evening.
