Delhi: ₹35-per-kg onions sell out at Rajiv Chowk Metro outlet

About 120kg of onions priced at ₹35 per kg sold out at the NCCF outlet inside Rajiv Chowk Metro station between 4pm and 8pm on Thursday, salesman Harsh Gautam said.

Shoppers can buy onions at ₹35 per kg through NAFED, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar outlets, as well as Safal stores. Retail prices in Delhi are about ₹48 per kg. Sales began at 40 outlets in the city this week.

At an outlet in Pocket A, Vasant Kunj, 50kg had sold within four hours of the stock arriving at noon on Friday.

About 450 tonnes of onions reached Delhi on the season’s first Kanda Express, which arrived around midnight. Trucks were moving the stock from Adarsh Nagar station to NAFED’s Narela storehouse for distribution to selected retail outlets. A further 360 tonnes arrived separately by truck.

The train had initially been expected to bring 800 tonnes. Consumer affairs secretary Nidhi Khare said the supplies were part of efforts to bring down prices ahead of the festive season.
