Delhi MPD 2047 proposes higher street parking rates near multi-level lots

Delhi’s next master plan proposes making on-street parking costlier than multi-level parking where such facilities already exist within 500 metres.

The proposed parking framework under MPD 2047 shifts the focus from building more spaces to managing existing ones better. DDA vice-chairman N Saravana Kumar said the current supply-led approach has encouraged dependence on private vehicles and used valuable land inefficiently.

The plan envisages a common institutional mechanism involving departments and agencies, with technology-enabled planning, construction and management of parking facilities. It proposes that agencies share parking assets, including arrangements where one contractor operates a nearby underground multi-level facility and surface parking.

For congested markets and commercial hubs, local bodies would identify priority parking-management areas and prepare plans with road-owning agencies, traffic police and local stakeholders. These plans could mark separate parking sites for shopkeepers needing day-long parking and visitors making shorter stops.

MPD 2047 also proposes park-and-ride facilities, pedestrian access, parking for taxis and intermediate public transport, and public bicycle-sharing links.
