Delhi’s Satya Niketan collapse follows a wider pattern of residential building failures

Seven students died when a paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, bringing building safety in dense residential neighbourhoods into focus.

National Crime Records Bureau data shows residential buildings made up the bulk of reported collapses between 2020 and 2024. There were 1,051 residential collapses in 2020, rising to 1,176 in 2022 before falling to 922 in 2024. Commercial and office-building collapses ranged from 51 to 77 cases annually.

Across residential and commercial collapses, 5,941 people died nationally during the five-year period, with annual deaths staying above 1,000. Delhi recorded 5.7 deaths per million population, placing it among the higher-risk regions in the data.

The cause of the Satya Niketan collapse is under investigation. The site has already prompted plans for PG safety rules and demolition of an adjacent building.
