Gurugram MPs cite drainage constraints as monsoon waterlogging persists

Gurugram’s old drains have been “squeezed due to construction” and cannot now be widened, Haryana MP Dharambir Singh said after monsoon rain left parts of the city waterlogged.

Singh, the MP for Bhiwani-Mahendragarh, said Gurugram’s planning was drawn up about 60 years ago, before its rapid growth in population, housing and vehicles. He also cited sudden heavy rainfall, saying water takes time to recede. While authorities were working to clear it, he said, “all can’t be done”.

Asked when the disruption would be resolved, Singh referred to Gurugram’s 2047 masterplan, saying it would prepare the city for future infrastructure needs.

Gurugram MP Rao Inderjit Singh said recurring waterlogging was linked to development over traditional drains that once carried water from the hills towards the Yamuna. He proposed underground tunnels along those former drainage routes, calling current measures temporary relief. He said the government was arranging funds for the work.
