DU faculty protest after alleged assault during DUSU campaigning at Motilal Nehru College

A faculty member at Motilal Nehru College (Evening) was allegedly beaten by a student campaigning for the Delhi University Students’ Union elections on Wednesday, faculty members said, leaving the teacher with serious injuries and in need of medical attention.

Teachers gathered at the South Campus college to demand action and said they were weighing an FIR and a boycott of election-related duties. They were not immediately certain which student organisation the campaigner represented.

The alleged assault came on the final day of DUSU campaigning, which also saw confrontations at other DU campuses. Outside Law Centre-I in North Campus, a dispute over campaign banners developed into a clash. ABVP said three of its members were injured; videos circulated online showed students exchanging blows and damaged vehicles, but did not establish how the confrontation began.

At Motilal Nehru College, faculty members also said campaigners clashed with teachers while attempting to enter the premises, injuring several teachers. NSUI alleged that ABVP-linked workers attacked one of its tribal student workers outside the college; ABVP denied the charge. A further clash was reported at Sri Aurobindo College.

Polling is scheduled for September 18, with counting the next day.
