Faridabad family donates 21-year-old’s organs after fatal road injury

A 21-year-old woman’s liver, two kidneys and corneas were donated after she was declared brain dead at Amrita Hospital in Faridabad following a road accident.

She was brought to the hospital late on August 20 with a head injury and treated in its Neuro ICU. Doctors later declared the injury unsurvivable, and her family agreed to deceased organ donation.

The organs were retrieved and allocated through the government-regulated organ allocation system and approved waiting lists. One kidney was transplanted at Amrita Hospital; the other organs were sent to designated transplant centres in Delhi and Faridabad.

Because the accident was a medico-legal case, organ retrieval and transfer had to proceed alongside statutory clearances and post-mortem procedures. Haryana and Delhi Police coordinated an interstate green corridor to reduce delays as the organs travelled across the state border.

Dr Gaurav Kakkar, who heads neurocritical care and neuroanaesthesia at the hospital, said the family’s decision gave other patients a chance at transplantation.
